Abseiling For Mind Solihull

We participated in the Birmingham Airport Charity Abseil this month. Our FM sustainability team of two, Darren Andrew and Kirsty Rose braved the challenge of a 100ft abseil for the day at the Birmingham’s Airport’s largest building Diamond House. The funds raised went towards Birmingham’s local charity of choice, Solihull Mind. In total, the event has raised a whopping £4,635.00, far beyond the expectations imagined for this event. This event brought together members of the Birmingham Airport staff, concessions teams, and members from the OCS, who were willing to raise awareness and fundraise for a fantastic charity.

The Birmingham Airport team aimed to bring their colleagues and partnership teams together to create a fundraising event. Our team arrived sharp at 9.30am, on Friday 9th June 2023. Our partners, Birmingham Airport planned this event for their charity of choice, Mind Solihull.

1 in 4 people have mental health problems in the UK and most of us don’t get the help they need. Mind help fight for mental health. They’ve changed minds across England and Wales by making mental health an everyday priority. They offer support, helping whenever you might need it through their information portal which was accessed 21.4 million times in the last year. Their advice and local services in areas across the UK have been responded to over 128,000 queries just in 2021/22 alone.

Our team did a fantastic job, once they registered on the ground floor of Diamond House, they received a safety briefing by fully qualified and insured abseil operator, fitted with full protection and safety equipment, they climbed the stairs, with the fear of heights left in the dust. Once they reached the roof, they were clipped with safety lines. Together Kirsty Rose and Darren Andrew, paired up and abseiled down Diamond House in 30 minutes flat, smashing the challenge of taking on the 100ft drop. We believe this was done for a worthy cause, fundraising for Mind Solihull, a local charity. We were grateful for the opportunity to experience this challenge. Mind offer their services free of charge to those who need it, which is why they need help fundraising and events like this make it possible. While we didn’t set a target goal, we helped smash expectations and overall are currently over £4,000. This money will go a long way in supporting their important work and helping them to make a real difference in the lives of people in the community.

We’d like to thank everyone who participated, taking the time to fundraise and thank Birmingham Airport for allowing us to join in on this amazing event, and lastly a huge thank you to everyone who donated.
