Dragon Boat Festival 2022

We participated in the Fundraising Newark Dragon Boat Race 2022 event this weekend, where 36 teams battled it out to become the winner. The funds raised went towards two wonderful charities, Beaumond House Hospice Care and Children’s Bereavement Centre. So far in total, the event has raised nearly a whopping £14,000 pounds. Race day took place on Sunday 18th September, where each team took part in three races before the nine fastest teams went through to the semi-finals. While we may not have won all the glory this weekend, we did reach the semi-finals heats and participated in the fasted heat of the evening, missing out by a less than a second to reach the finals.

Dragon boat racing is the fastest growing water activity in Britain today. With up to ten team members able to paddle on a 30’ boat, and a drummer at the front to help the teams with timing. We had a large crew who took part for us, thirteen people signed up in total to make sure we had to numbers to participate through-out the entire day. Out of the 36 teams participating, Novati cruised through to the Semi Finals and fought to a respectable 5th place. The team did a brilliant job battling it out at the River Trent, with their team Captains Philip Martin and Sally Burrows rallying the troops though-out the whole day.

While the Dragon Boating racing was the main event, there was still lots of activities to get involved with at the Festival. There was entertainment for the whole family at the Riverside Stage. The fire service, live music from Clive Rudd, Matt Shepardson, Suzie Chambers, the choirs of Barnby Road and performers from AJ’s Dance. There was also great entertainment for children, including inflatables a climbing wall, face painting, slime making and fun fair stalls.

While we worked brilliantly as a team, all this competition was done for a worthy cause, fundraising for two local charities Beaumond House Hospice Care and Children’s Bereavement Centre. Both charities offer their services free of charge to those who need it, which is why they need help through fundraising and events like these make it possible. We beat our £500.00 target given to us by the event and we’re currently at £575.00. However, there is still time for people to do more!
